Body image is an example of Marxist criticism. Marxist criticism is a perspective that emphasizes the role that social class poses on other social classes. The upper class are the ones that set the standard for beauty. In 1550 Catherine de’ Medici started the trend of corsets. People are taught to idolize celebrities and want to mimic them because it’ll make the regular social class feel like a celebrity. The upper class has so much control over the middle class, but especially the working class.
This issue is also an example of feminist criticism. Feminist criticism is a perspective on how women should behave or how they look according to a male dominated world. This perfectly relates to my fire project issue because we live in a male dominated world. There are 3,487,869,561 males in the world and 3,439,427,037 females.[1] Women have always come second to men, so men feel like they can control what women wear and how they act. The fashion world is male dominated. “…women feel more comfortable taking advice on how they should look from a man.”[2] This proves that men are ever controlling over women.
